Politische Flüchtlinge aus der Tschechoslowakei im Zuge der ersten großen Nachkriegsmigration nach Österreich

The treatise outlines the situation of Slovak and Czech refugees in Austria in the first decade after the World War II. There are discussed questions concerning causes of emigration from Czechoslovakia into Austria. The paper is based on the hypothesis that in the early post war years, the situation of refugees in Austria was dependent on its domestic development and the political situation in its neighbouring countries under Soviet control and influence. For the refugees from Czechoslovakia, Austria in the first post war decade was primarily a transit country. Only after 1955, after re-establishing Austria as a sovereign state, the southern neighbour of Czechoslovakia became an area of freedom for refugees from communist countries.

Article elaborates on the political development in Slovakia at the end of the 1980s, namely in 1989, which was crucially influenced by a document entitled Bratislava nahlas (Bratislava/Aloud) published by a group of Bratislava‑based environmentalists in 1987, and the so‑called Candlelight Demonstration, which demanded that freedom of religion be respected, organised by the so‑called Christian dissent activists in Bratislava on 25 March 1988.

Regional Elections in Slovakia – a New Reformation of the Slovak Political Scene?

The aim of the present study is to analyse the events and results of the elections to bodies of regional self-governments in Slovakia in November 2017. The elections were held under the conditions of the amended legislation after the abolition of the two-tier election system of the presidents of the regions. The study analyses the process of forming pre-election coalitions and the mobilisation of voters. Although the strongest body of the ruling coalition, Direction – Social Democracy Party, obtained the highest number of seats, there was a marked drop in voter participation. The regional elections of 2017 signalled, in contrast, the consolidation of the right-wing opposition (SaS, OĽaNO, and KDH), whose agenda contains elements of anti-European and anti-party populism.

Srbsko medzi cyrilikou a latinkou

The paper deals with the discussions about the role of Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet in the Serbian society after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991. Cyrillic is a traditional Serbian alphabet and the Latin alphabet was introduced only after the establishment of Yugoslavia in 1918. Recently, the majority of population prefers the Latin alphabet instead of Cyrillic. The aim of author is to identify the main actors of disputes regarding the alphabet in Serbia. This issue is going to be politicized, as the centre-right and right-wing political parties declared their aim to strengthen the position of Cyrillic by the legislative measures. On the other hand, such policy is part of nationalizing processes in Serbia, accompanied with the rejection of heritage of the former Yugoslavia.
