Article elaborates on the political development in Slovakia at the end of the 1980s, namely in 1989, which was crucially influenced by a document entitled Bratislava nahlas (Bratislava/Aloud) published by a group of Bratislava‑based environmentalists in 1987, and the so‑called Candlelight Demonstration, which demanded that freedom of religion be respected, organised by the so‑called Christian dissent activists in Bratislava on 25 March 1988.

Srbsko medzi cyrilikou a latinkou

The paper deals with the discussions about the role of Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet in the Serbian society after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991. Cyrillic is a traditional Serbian alphabet and the Latin alphabet was introduced only after the establishment of Yugoslavia in 1918. Recently, the majority of population prefers the Latin alphabet instead of Cyrillic. The aim of author is to identify the main actors of disputes regarding the alphabet in Serbia. This issue is going to be politicized, as the centre-right and right-wing political parties declared their aim to strengthen the position of Cyrillic by the legislative measures. On the other hand, such policy is part of nationalizing processes in Serbia, accompanied with the rejection of heritage of the former Yugoslavia.

Unspectacular Destalinization: the Case of Slovak Writers after 1956

On the basis of archival sources, in this essay I examine the debates that took place among Slovak writers in the spring of 1956 and afterwards. I focus on the clashes between the Union of Slovak Writers and the leadership of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia (CPCz) that began at the time, and also on the internal discussions among the pro-Communist intellectuals concerning the interpretation of de-Stalinization process.

Slovensko a Maďarsko – spojenectvo s historickou záťažou

The presented study analyses the use of the so-called memory policies in bilateral relations between Slovakia and Hungary after 1993. Its aim is to identify the main reference points from the past brought up by Slovakia’s foreign policy in promoting nation-state interests of the Slovak Republic. At the same time, the study strives to identify the extent to which this process has been a result of deliberate “memory policies” pursued by the state institutions of Slovakia and of Hungary. Furthermore, it attempts to ex- plore the impact of the historical aspects of Slovak-Hungarian relations on major decisions of Slovakia’s foreign policy and to establish why, up until 2015, Slovak-Hungarian historical reconciliation has not been achieved.

The Nationalizing Processes in Slovakia 1969–1988. The Case Study of Hungarian Minority

The paper deals with the situation of Hungarian minority in Slovakia in the period of the regime of so called “Normalization” after the suppression of “Prague Spring” in 1970s and 1980s. The issue of minority policy of Czechoslovak / Slovak government is discussed as a specific aspect of the nationalizing policy. The paper is based on the archival research of the documents provided by Charter 77 and the Committee for Protection of the Hungarian minority rights in Czechoslovakia.
