Srbsko medzi cyrilikou a latinkou

The paper deals with the discussions about the role of Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet in the Serbian society after the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991. Cyrillic is a traditional Serbian alphabet and the Latin alphabet was introduced only after the establishment of Yugoslavia in 1918. Recently, the majority of population prefers the Latin alphabet instead of Cyrillic. The aim of author is to identify the main actors of disputes regarding the alphabet in Serbia. This issue is going to be politicized, as the centre-right and right-wing political parties declared their aim to strengthen the position of Cyrillic by the legislative measures. On the other hand, such policy is part of nationalizing processes in Serbia, accompanied with the rejection of heritage of the former Yugoslavia.

Slovakia’s Eastern policy – from the Trojan horse of Russia to “Eastern multivectoralism”

Slovakia’s relations with the states of Eastern Europe not only have a bilateral impact, but contain geopolitical, security and economic dimensions as well. This article analyzes the domestic, bilateral and multilateral aspects of relations between Slovakia and Russia. The article also focuses on bilateral relations with Ukraine, where Slovakia is among the most active supporters of Ukraine’s future EU membership.

The presented study analyses the use of the so-called memory policies in bilateral relations between Slovakia and Hungary after 1993. Its aim is to identify the main reference points from the past brought up by Slovakia’s foreign policy in promoting nation-state interests of the Slovak Republic. At the same time, the study strives to identify the extent to which this process has been a result of deliberate “memory policies” pursued by the state institutions of Slovakia and of Hungary. Furthermore, it attempts to ex- plore the impact of the historical aspects of Slovak-Hungarian relations on major decisions of Slovakia’s foreign policy and to establish why, up until 2015, Slovak-Hungarian historical reconciliation has not been achieved.

Regional Elections in Slovakia – a New Reformation of the Slovak Political Scene?

The aim of the present study is to analyse the events and results of the elections to bodies of regional self-governments in Slovakia in November 2017. The elections were held under the conditions of the amended legislation after the abolition of the two-tier election system of the presidents of the regions. The study analyses the process of forming pre-election coalitions and the mobilisation of voters. Although the strongest body of the ruling coalition, Direction – Social Democracy Party, obtained the highest number of seats, there was a marked drop in voter participation. The regional elections of 2017 signalled, in contrast, the consolidation of the right-wing opposition (SaS, OĽaNO, and KDH), whose agenda contains elements of anti-European and anti-party populism.

Poland as Regional Power and Polish-Slovak Relations

The study reflects upon the position of Poland in the region of Central and Eastern Europe and concentrates on Polish-Slovak relations. It analyses both the active approach of Polish diplomacy to integration processes in Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. the approach which has won the support of the population majority, and Poland’s effort to formulate its own civilisation message in the region. The study examines the extent and character of support provided by Poland to its neighbours, especially to Slovakia, in their integration efforts. Analysing Poland’s activity in the region, the author characterises Poland as a regional power.
