Popis:This paper seeks to analyse the broader context of the sustainable development discourse in Europe. First, optimistic arguments claiming that Europe is performing well in terms of sustainable development are presented. Second, counter-arguments are introduced – refuting the former by claiming they are geographically limited. Third, an alternative conceptualisation of sustainable development based on the world-systems perspective is proposed. And finally, the investment portfolio of the European Investment Bank is tested on the grounds of the hypotheses formulated drawing on the theoretical part of the paper.
